Class 1 Washington State Court of Appeals Procedures
Learn how to file a case in the Washington State Court of Appeals from start to finish. Understand the scope of review of a trial court decision. Learn what the purposes of the appeal pleadings are and their deadlines. The class starts out with a brief overview of e-filing and how to calculate deadlines. Then it covers a civil lawsuit from start to finish. Topics: Summons and Complaint, Civil Cover Sheet, service of process, Certificate of Service, Answer, Affirmative Defenses, Cross-Claims, Counterclaims, Third-Party Claims, Discovery, Pretrial and Trial. Discussion of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure as they relate to the process as well as the differences in Superior Court procedures. Each class will vary somewhat depending on the experience levels of the students. Emphasis will be on what parts of the above steps in the lawsuit process need to be covered, depending on the experience level of the attendees. If you are a beginner, definitely take this class as well as the other class to get the full picture of the process. They “play” both plaintiff and defendant throughout the fictitious civil case which is designed for the class.
