Class 1 Washington State Court of Appeals Procedures - 2010 Procedures

Class 2 United States District Court - Western District of Washington - 2010 Procedures

December and January classes focus on the major changes to the Federal Rules and Local Rules for the Western District. These classes include a notebook with an outline of the changes. If you don’t learn how to calculate the new deadlines, your documents will be late. These are effective December 1, 2009. After January - Debbie will resume the normal USDC Class with the information implemented in the regular USDC Western book versus an update notebook. Classes will be held on 12/17 or 1/21 from 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm - $100 total cost. Below is a description on the regular classes which will occur all year, starting in February 2009.
The February 2009 (not on the schedule yet) class starts out with a brief overview of e-filing and how to calculate deadlines. Then it covers a civil lawsuit from start to finish. Topics: Summons and Complaint, Civil Cover Sheet, service of process, Certificate of Service, Answer, Affirmative Defenses, Cross-Claims, Counterclaims, Third-Party Claims, Discovery, Motions, Pretrial and Trial. Also includes coverage of the Minute Orders:
Minute Order From the Court Regarding Deadlines for Initial Disclosures; FRCP 26(i) Conference; Joint Status Report - nature and complexity of the case; results of the conference; proposed deadline for joining additional parties; statement of which ADR method should be used (CR 39.1); statement of when mediation should occur; proposed discovery plan; date by which discovery can be completed; whether parties agree to a magistrate in proceedings; whether parties want to bifurcate case; whether a pretrial statement and/or pretrial order should be dispensed with; suggestions for shortening or simplifying case; date case will be ready for trial; whether trial will be jury or non-jury; total number of trial days; dates counsel may have conflicts with regarding the trial date setting; and when service will take place on defendants not served.
